Extreme hunger and malnutrition remain a huge barrier to development in many countries. 795 million people worldwide are estimated to be chronically undernourished as of 2014. Over 90 million children under the age of five are dangerously underweight worldwide. And one person in every four still goes hungry in Africa. Globally, more than 800 million people are still living on less than $1.25 a day.

Rwanda, predominantly rural, is one of the world’s most densely populated countries with about 80% of the 11 million Rwandans living in rural areas. Although Rwanda has recently seen continued economic growth coupled with progress in social development in a number of areas; over 70% of the population is still engaged in subsistence farming. Poverty level is at 39.1 percent and food insecurity & stunting are still presented as great challenges to many households according to the most recent official statistics.

Capitalizing on the rich and long experience of Welthungerhilfe in Rwanda and guided by the above stated mission and vision, Agro Action Rwanda intends to contribute to addressing the above described food & poverty challenges. We specialize & focus on activities and projects that contribute to SDGs with a special focus on Goal 1 & 2 (End poverty & hunger). Moreover, several other SDGs such as Goal 5 (Gender), Goal 6 (WASH), Goal 7 (Clean Energy), Goal 13 (Climate action), etc. are as well of especial interest and have to be mainstreamed in our interventions. Locally, Agro Action Rwanda contributes well to the fulfillment of the existing short and long term national strategic development policies and plans (Rwanda Vision 2020, EDPRS II, etc.).

Agro Action Rwanda believes that realizing the above ambitious vision, mission and goals can be possible only if all actors put efforts together and by keeping the most affected people in the center of the whole process. Therefore Participation, Inclusion and Transparency are key values for Agro Action Rwanda.

Our vision and mission cannot however be realized without strong partnerships with various actors and institutions on local and international levels. We believe that this planet has got all it takes for every human being to get free from hunger and poverty and that partnerships guided by the three above stated values can lead to a hunger and poverty free human society. We therefore do highly value and seek to build strong and long term partnerships with local and international actors who share and support our vision and mission.
